Previously, between 1979 and 1980, the Palma City Council had approved the statutes of the Foundation.
The creation of the Foundation grew out of the will of Miró disseminate and promote artistic creation, and their desire to preserve their workshops, which had been his creative space from 1956 until the end of his life in 1983.
In 1987, Rafael Moneo, who was then chairman of the Graduate School of Design at Harvard, was commissioned to design the new headquarters of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró on land adjacent to the studies of Miró. On December 19, 1992 the new headquarters designed by Moneo opened its doors to the public with what came true desire to return to Joan Miro Mallorca part of his life and his work.
This was because Joan Miró had maintained a close relationship with Mallorca throughout his life. Although born in Barcelona on April 20, 1893, his mother Dolores Ferrer, as his maternal grandparents were from Mallorca. This family tie made from 1900, when he looked barely 7 years, began to spend part of summer with her grandmother in Mallorca.
During these summer stays, the great universal artist made drawings of landscapes and landmarks such as La Llotja, Bellver Castle, windmills and turtles.
In 1954, Miró decided to move permanently to live in Mallorca and in 1956 had been fulfilled her dream of having his own workshop, designed by his friend, the Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert.
The seeds sown by Miró over a lifetime went off spreading beyond his death on December 25, 1983, at his home in Abrines are in Palma.
