Chapel Barceló, cool oasis in the Cathedral of Palma
In the Blessed Sacrament chapel of the Cathedral of Mallorca which occupies the right side of the apse header, the Majorcan artist Miquel Barceló has created a great work that recreates iconic, through a seabed, the multiplication of the loaves and fish and the wedding at Cana, about the risen Christ.
The material used in this enterprise, fraught with technical difficulties, it was clay.
He has been the creation of a wall polychrome pottery of 300 m2, covering the architectural walls. In addition, five windows of 12 meters in height with grisaille tones and a set of liturgical furniture made of stone and comprising Binissalem altar, ambo, presidential chair and two benches for the choir grounds, complete the procedure.
All this in a chapel of gothic architecture that belongs to the oldest part of the factory cathedral, from the fourteenth century.
The reform made by the renowned artist has not been without controversy, with critics and enthusiastic and leaves no one indifferent.
While for some it is a humanist and pagan vision of the mystery of life in the contradictory context of a religious framework, for others, including several deans and members of the Bishopric, Barceló's work exudes spirituality and transmits the reconciliation of the Church more contemporary art.
