Capdepera Castle: eight centuries of history within its walls Mallorca
It is a walled fortress that began construction in 310, although in the fourteenth century was rebuilt on the ruins of a Muslim village.
Its importance in the island is that since she took out the surrender of Menorca. Having King James I of Aragon conquered Mallorca, thought he needed the troops for future conquest of Valencia, so he devised a ruse to deceive the Muslims residing in Menorca and make these surrender.
To do this, he ordered large amount of light bonfires in Capdepera, visible from the neighboring island so as to make them believe the Saracens menorquines had camped there a large army and prepared to invade.
The ruse worked, so finally, in this castle, the treaty was signed in Capdepera, whereby Muslims were allowed to remain in Menorca in submission to the King of Aragon under "tributaje".
