Theatres

Mallorca has around twenty theatres, both private and state owned. The main ones are located in Palma. These are the Auditorium and the Principal Theatre, where the main national plays, ballets and musicals are performed.
The Auditorium (private) is located in an enviable spot: in Passeig Marítim, right in front of the sea. Its shows are always interesting and famous. It was built in 1969 and has a singular architectural style. It has two rooms for plays, operas, concerts and other kind of shows. The Sala Magna is the biggest room and has two levels and a total capacity of 1700 people.
The Principal Theatre (Island Council) is very popular due to its historical importance. It is located in the centre of Palma. The original construction of the building started in 1853. Many important plays have been performed in this theatre since it was inaugurated for the first time in the 19th century.
Palma also has two municipal theatres: the Xesc Forteza Theatre and the Municipal Theatre in Passeig Mallorca. The first one is located in the historic city centre. Today, its programme only includes music and dance shows.
The Municipal Theatre in Passeig Mallorca is a small municipal theatre in which all kind of shows, puppets, events and cinematographic festivals in Palma are held.
On the other hand, the Teatre del Mar is located in the famous neighbourhood of Es Molinar. It offers alternative shows.
The tickets for the main theatres in Palma can be purchased at the theatres or through the ServiCaixa service.
In Mallorca there are also many other theatres, such as the Alcúdia Auditorium, the Porreres Auditorium, the Sa Màniga Auditorium, the Llorenç Villalonga Museum, the Pere Ginard Museum, Sa Botiga des Buffons, the Manacor Theatre and the theatres of Artà, Capdepera, Lloseta, Muro and Santanyí.
