Can Picafort

Can Picafort is located on the northwest coast of Mallorca, right in the centre of the Bay of Alcúdia, the biggest bay of the Balearic Islands, since it has a 17 km-long beach. To the east there are wooded natural areas with only two small villages. At this end of the bay there is Cap Ferrutx, a very wild and beautiful area with cliffs and pine tree forests that are very difficult to access by car. The only way to get there is by boat or on foot.
In the interior there is the village of Santa Margalida, the original population centre of this municipality. It is surrounded by cultivated lands.
This area is 54 km from Palma.Almost half of the journey is via the motorway that crosses the centre of the island.
The public transport connection from Palma to Can Picafort is pretty regular. From the central station in Plaça d’Espanya (Palma) there is a regular bus line that goes to Can Picafort, and another one that links with the train.
Gastronomy: Food in general is international, although seafood is usually the speciality. The typical dishes of this area are: sopes mallorquines, tumbet, escaldums, frit mallorquí, pork loin with cabbage, espinagada, panades, vegetable pies and, of course, sobrassada and einsaïmada.
Beaches: Can Picafort has 9 km of coastline, where you can find fine sand beaches as well as isolated beaches. At the beach of Can Picafort, which holds the European Blue Flag Certificate, there are sun lounger and sun umbrella rental services, lifeguards, as well as bars and cafés.
Nature: The public finca of Son Real has a wide diversity of autochthonous flora and fauna. There, there are three signposted routes that you can do on foot or practicing Nordic Walking. In this finca you can visit the information centre and also hire bicycles. Moreover, there are no parking problems. It is important to mention the virgin beaches you can reach through the finca, as well as the Necropolis of Son Real.
Culture: Can Picafort is located in the middle of two natural parks, one of which is rich in archaeological sites. Its big dimensions invite you to go hiking or ride a bike.
Some places of special interest are: Son Real Park, the Necropolis of Son Real, the Talaiot of Sa Nineta and S’Albufera Natural Park.
Sport and Adventure: Can Picafort is located between two natural parks and long beaches which are perfect for hiking enthusiasts. Including the three population centres there is a total of 50 km of road suitable for road cycling, as well as many other routes. This municipality offers many options for all kind of sports and has many municipal facilities. Among the sport events that are held here it is important to highlight karate, karting, tennis, football (regional and international) and fishing (national and international) championships, as well as cross-country running, popular races, international half marathons, cycling and ATB races, and national yoga events, amongst others. Climate: The average winter temperatures are 16-18 °C, although at night they can fall up to 5-9 °C. In summertime, the average temperature is 29-31 °C.
