Puig de Randa
Puig de Cura is the highest point of the Randa mountain (548 m) and an excellent panoramic viewpoint over Mallorca. Ramon Llull lived here in the 13th century and in the 15th century a Lullian school was founded to spread his doctrine. This school was the origin of Palma’s General Lullian Institute.
Randa is a small village located at the foot of Puig the Randa, in the centre of Mallorca, within the municipality of Algaida.
In this mountain you can find the Hermitage of Sant Honorat, the Sanctuary of Nostra Senyora de Gràcia and the Sanctuary of Nostra Senyora de Cura.
In order to get to the mountain, you have to go first to the village of Randa, located at the foot of the massif that bears the same name, and follow the road that leads to the summit.
The Sanctuary of Gràcia has its origins in a cave named Cova de s’Aresta. In the 15th century two Franciscan monks lived there, turning the cave into a hermitage.
Randa, its sanctuary and the Puig are a bit far away from the conventional routes. They are magical spots. On the way out of Randa, towards Cura, you can find the water fountain of Font de Randa, a vestige of the water system built by the Moors. Part of the structure is underground and the water flows along troughs to the public washhouses, where in the past women used to wash the clothes. Finally, this water continues on to the land of those who had rights to use the water for irrigation purposes.
The Sanctuary of Cura includes sleeping accommodation with cells, built from 1947 onwards, where groups, families and those who want to spend some time in Puig de Cura can stay.
