Ses Fonts Ufanes
In the vicinity of the Hermitage of Sant Miquel, within the municipality of Campanet, an impressive hydrological phenomenon takes place every year. As if by magic, resounding water fountains rise in the forest of the finca of Gabellí every time that the autumn or winter rain has been abundant. They are popularly known as Ses Fonts Ufanes (“The Ufan Fountains”).
To give an idea of this spectacular phenomenon we just have to remember that the water flow has sometimes exceeded 100 000 litres per second. Then, this water feeds partially the aquifer of Sa Pobla’s plain and part of S’Albufera in Alcúdia.
This phenomenon originates pilgrimage walks and popular excursions. Therefore, every time that the fountains rise, they attract a lot of spectators.
In 2001, these fountains were awarded the category of Natural Monument, a title that covers the Holm oak forest area in Gabellí Petit. In fact, they became the first Natural Monument to be awarded such title in the Balearic Islands.
The aim of this award was to contribute to the conservation of the natural ecosystems and guarantee their survival, plan the sustainable use of water resources, as well as preserve the excellent landscape values of this natural monument and its ecosystem.
From 2005 these fountains have been under the supervision of the Environment Ministry of the Balearic Government. The surrounding forest is also a protected natural area due to its fauna and flora.
