S’Albufera Natural Park
S’Albufera, located between the municipalities of Alcúdia, Muro and Sa Pobla, is a vast wet area of great environmental importance. It was the first natural park of the Balearic Islands. In 1988, the Government approved the creation of this park, thanks to which 1700 ha are protected.
This area was also declared as “Area of Special Protection for Birds” and as Biosphere Reserve. On the other hand, S’Albufera is also included in the Ramsar Convention for the conservation of wetlands.
Thanks to all this, much of the area of S’Albufera reserves untouched its natural characteristics, which turns this park into a privileged place of great environmental value due to the lack of degradation.
In summer, sea water enters S’Albufera, while during the rest of the year it receives the water that come from the ravines. In this area you can find salicornias and reeds, as well as tree species, such as elms, tamarinds and poplars.
The fauna that lives in S’Albufera is not only abundant, but also diverse. About 230 bird species have been classified in this area, including those that nest here and those that spend some time in this protected natural space. On the other hand, there is also plenty of fishes (eel, sea bass, sand smelt), amphibious and reptiles. At the Reception you can get a list with the bird species you can identify in the park and a map.
The entrance to the park is located on the road connecting Alcúdia and Artà (C-712), on the so-called Pont dels Anglesos.
The Reception Centre “Sa Roca” is located 1 km from the entrance.
You can visit the park on foot or by bicycle. Vehicles are not allowed to enter the park (apart from people with justified handicaps or disabilities). There is a car park near the entrance.
