Cap de Formentor
Formentor is a narrow peninsula with a length of 12 km and a width of 3 km. It is located at the north end of Mallorca, within the municipality of Pollença. It is one of the most emblematic and visited spots in Mallorca thanks to its beautiful landscape, which brings together the sea and the mountains.
In 1928, Adan Diehl bought the lands of Formentor and built a luxury residence, which became the emblematic Hotel Formentor. The hotel was inaugurated in 1929 and soon became a legendary destination for the European elite tourism, since many internationally famous figures frequent this place.
In the 50s (20th century), the hotel became the venue for the first international congress dedicated to the Mallorcan writer and poet Ramon Llull.
In 1959, the famous Camilo José Cela (Nobel Prize for Literature 1989 and Cervantes Prize 1995) organized the first literary meeting known as “Poetic Conversations in Formentor” through the Papeles de Son Armadans magazine.
This contest led to the Formentor Prize (1961), which took place there again one year after, although from then on they started to be held in different places in the world.

he Formentor Novel Prize became the highest-value prize of that time. Back then, the winner obtained 10 000 thousand dollars.
In the 90s, a meeting of heads of state of the European Union was held at this hotel.
Nowadays, the hotel has recovered the spirit and splendour of its beginnings thanks to the management of Grupo Barceló, the new business owner.
The hotel’s terrace enjoys fantastic views over the bay and the gardens are amazing. Close to the hotel, the white sand beaches of Formentor are sheltered by the pine forest. In its vicinity there are golf courses and horse riding facilities.

In the high season, buses are arranged to take guests from Palma and Port de Pollença to the headland.
The thick and dense pine and Holm oak forest located on the peninsula of Formentor surrounds the beach until vegetation reaches the sea. The tree branches almost touch the water. You cannot miss this wonderful place. We also recommend that you visit Formentor’s Lighthouse on your way back. Watching the sunset from that height and in front of the horizon and the infinite sea could become part of your best memories album.
