Cathedral of Palma
It is essential that you visit the imposing Gothic Cathedral of Palma, built between the 13th and the 17th century. It took almost four centuries to finish it, which gives you an idea of its magnitude. It is a construction of Mediterranean Gothic style, with clear influences from Northern Europe. It is 121 metres long and 55 metres high.
Its construction began in 1229, after the conquest on Mallorca by the Crown of Aragon. King James I decided to knock down the old big mosque of Medina Mayurca in order to erect a large temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A storm raged so violently during the journey to the island, that he made an oath and promised, should his enterprise succeed, he would build a temple to venerate her.
The names of its architects are unknown, although it has been proved that many artists worked on it (sculptors and painters).
In the Chapel of Trinity, in the presbytery, there are the sepulchres of King James II and III.
You will probably be shocked by the location of the temple, its interior magnificence and the works carried out by Gaudi (the forged iron sculpture that hangs from the ceiling) and Miquel Barceló (Chapel of the Holy Sacrament).
Gaudi also supervised other important and controversial works at the beginning of the 20th century. The main changes that took place were: the elimination of the choir that was located in the middle of the nave, which was divided into two parts; the elaboration of a baldachin for the main altar; the creation of a new pulpit; and the introduction of different decorative modernist elements, such as the forged iron sculpture.
If you have enough time, you should really pay a visit to the Cathedral. It is well worth it.
