Valldemossa

This small village on the northwest coast of Mallorca is an important reference point at a tourist, environmental and cultural level. It has a few important tourist attractions and constitutes the starting point of many hiking routes in Serra de Tramuntana. The village is located 400 metres above sea level and is 15 km from Palma. There are bus services that depart daily from Palma and connect Valldemossa with Deià and Sóller.
In many tourist guides, Valldemossa Charterhouse is the main object of interest thanks to its architectural features and because Chopin and George Sand lived there between 1838 and 1839.
During George Sand’s stay on the island, she wrote a bittersweet book about her experiences there (“A winter in Mallorca”). This book has become a cult book that is worth reading if you want to find out more about Valldemossa in the 19th century.
Valldemossa Charterhouse houses a cloister, a church, a pharmacy, several cells, the municipal museum and King Sancho’s Palace. This old monastery was inhabited by Carthusian monks from the 14th century until the 19th century. It houses several cells in which documents, books, and furniture related to the Carthusian Order have been found. Its museum exhibits the Carthusian historical and artistic legacy. The old pharmacy is amazing, since it has old preparations and a collection of 135 period ceramic jars from Catalonia.
On the other hand, King Sancho’s Palace is the monks’ old royal residence as well as their first house. In 1808, this building took in the persecuted writer Jovellanos.
If you go to Valldemossa, you have to stop at the Costa Nord Centre, founded by Michael Douglas. Today, this place has become an interpretation centre about Serra de Tramuntana. Archduke Ludwig Salvator’s residences (Son Marroig and Miramar) are another must-see.
If you have enough time, Valldemossa is a fantastic place to wander around and explore. This charming village is located on a hillside. It is a great place to visit. You will realise that if you walk along the old road to Palma.
If you go to Valldemossa on Sunday, do not forget to visit the street market.
It is also important to go down to Port de Valldemossa, 7 km from the village. The route is very beautiful and offers incomparable views. Once you are at the harbour, you can swim in the sea and eat a good fish soup or a paella in one of the restaurants. You won’t regret it.
