Ses Salines
Ses Salines is a municipality located in the comarca of Migjorn, on the southwest end of the island. It is bounded Campos and Santanyí. Apart from the village of Ses Salines (where the Town Hall is), the coastal tourist resort of Sa Colònia de Sant Jordi also belongs to this municipality.
The origins of this area go back to a Muslim hamlet from the 13th century. From ancient times, the workers of the salt evaporation ponds lived in the area of Es Salobrar de Campos.
In this municipality, important prehistoric and Phoenician remains (prior to the Roman conquest of Mallorca) have been found. On the islet of Na Guardis, located in front to Sa Colònia de Sant Jordi’s harbour, Carthaginian merchants coming from the neighbouring island of Ibiza established a small colony in the 4th century BC. Such colony is connected with the trade of the salt extracted from these salt ponds, currently exploited in the area of Es Salobrar de Campos near the beach of Es Trenc.
In Ses Salines, most people live in houses. There are still a few watchtowers integrated into the buildings of some houses. They are proof of old times in which pirate attacks became a real and constant danger to the coastal areas in Mallorca. You can also find the towers of old windmills used to grind wheat.
In Plaça de Sant Bartomeu, the oldest part in the village, you can see the building of the old church, which was built in 1664. It was the first worshipping place in Ses Salines and is now a private home. The parish church of Sant Bartomeu, which was built between the 19th and 20th centuries in a neoclassical style, is the most emblematic building in Ses Salines.
Some places to be highlighted are the tourist resort of Sa Colònia de Sant Jordi and the adjacent beaches of Es Trenc, Es Carbó, Es Dolç and Es Marques.
