Sencelles
The municipality of Sencelles is located in the districts of Es Pla and Raiguer, between Lloret de Vistalegre, Costitx, Santa Eugènia, Algaida, Binissalem, Santa Maria,Inca and Consell. It is 25 km from Palma. Sencelles has an extension of 52 km² and a population of 1798 inhabitants. Its lands are part of Binissalem’s Protected Designation of Origin wine area.
This municipality includes the hamlets of Ruberts, Jornets, Cas Canar, Son Arrosa and Biniali, which in the past were Islamic farmsteads. They were rich thanks to the wine cultivation. Today, they are small villages of great interest, since they preserve emblematic examples of the modest country architecture in Mallorca. Biniali, with the church of Sant Cristòfol and the mill of Can Xico, and Ruberts, are the most important hamlets.
This municipality is ploughed by three ravines that run trough Holm oak forests and cultivated lands.
Sister Francinaina Cirer, also known as Aunt Xiroia, is very respected by the locals and many other Mallorcans, since her figure is known all over the island. In 1989, she was beatified by John Paul II. The building of Ca ses Monges houses the Daughters of Charity convent, preserving some elements from the time when Sister Franciscaina used to live there (late 18th century-early 19th century).
