Selva

Selva is a municipality located 32 km from Palma, in the district of Raiger. It is bounded by Inca. It consists of five population centres: Selva, Caimari, Moscari, Binibona and Biniamar. It has a population of 3500 inhabitants and has a surface of over 2000 ha qualified as a Natural Area of Special Interest. This region keeps its country landscape intact.

This municipality, located at the foot of Serra de Tramuntana, offers a great contrast between plains and mountains. On the one hand, it has chalky and solid mountains with natural forests exploited until recently by the coal miners that used to work there. On the other hand, it also has flat areas divided into numerous and small agricultural properties based on dry-land and irrigated cultivation. Almond trees, olive trees, cereals, carob trees and fig trees are the main products grown in this area.

As mentioned before, this municipality consists of five population centres. Selva is the main one, since it is where the Town Hall is situated. It is also important to highlight the Gothic church from the 13th century, dedicated to the village’s patron saint, Saint Lawence. According to the folk belief, the highest part of this church is at the same level of Lluc’s square.

Caimari: It is the second population centre and is located on the slopes of Serra de Tramuntana. Some events to be highlighted are “The Olive Fair” (November) and the International Ancient Music Festival (November), promoted and organised by Tomeu Seguí Campins (harpsichordist) and in which famous artists such as Gustav Leonhardt (2008) have performed.

Moscari: Third population centre in this municipality located between Selva and Campanet. Moscari’s festival takes place on the last week in August.

Biniamar: Fourth population centre in this municipality located between Selva and Lloseta. It is important to highlight its church (20th century), which was promoted by Antoni Maura. When Mr. Maura left the Government, this church remained unfinished.

Binibona: It is the smallest population centre in this municipality and is located between Caimari and Campanet. It is famous for its agritourism establishments, which are surrounded by a thick forest, as well as by the remains of a botanic garden from the 19th century.
