Santa María del Camí
Santa Maria del Camí is located in the district of Es Pla. It borders the municipalities of Consell, Santa Eugènia, Palma, Marratxí, Bunyola and Alaró. It has an extension of 37.93 km² and a population of 4500 inhabitants. It covers three different areas, two in the mountains and one in a plain.
“Santa Maria del Camí” is a toponym of Catalan origin. It replaced the Arab name of “Mahuiar o Maüia”, which means “the path”, “the stop” or “the inn on the way”.
After the conquest, this place took the name of the church of Santa Maria del Camí (13th century). 42 archaeological sites prove the presence of human beings in prehistoric times. The Talaiotic culture is also present through talaiots such as Claper des Doblers, Es Cabàs and Son Seguí.
After the Catalan conquest, the lands of this municipality were granted to Bernat de Santa Eugènia.
This Mallorcan comarca is known for the quality of its wine, which received Binissalem’s Protected Designation of Origin
Santa Maria del Camí has historically been a much visited place due to its location on the north/south route of Mallorca, a route that was already very busy in Roman times.
This village cultivates almond trees, carob trees and wine, amongst others.
