Sant Joan
Located in the centre of the island, Sant Joan, previously known as “Sant Joan de Sineu”, was founded in 1300. It borders the municipalities of Petra, Villafranca de Bonany, Porreres, Montuiri, Lloret de Vistalegre and Sineu and has a population of 2000 inhabitants.
This municipality obtained the status of village in 1300.
Its land is profusely cultivated. The main product in this area is the tomato cluster, heritage of the Arab period, in which horticulture was introduced for the first time. Wheat, almond trees, vineyards and pig farming are the main activities around which Sant Joan economy’s revolves.
The finca of Els Calderers is a must-see. They will show you the Mallorcan rural lifestyle during the 18th century. The history of this finca goes back to the 13th century, when it appears documented under the name of its owners, the Calderers family. In the 18th century, this finca passed into the hands of the noble Verí family, who in 1750 built the impressive stately mansion that we can see today. Els Calderers is located on the Palma – Manacor road, near km 37.

- Festivals. On August 29, the village celebrates the patron saint’s day of Sant Joan Degollat. On June 24, there is a festival called “Sol que Baila” (literally, “Dancing Sun”), which coincides with the summer solstice. Other festivals include Quart Diumenge (“Fourth Sunday”) or Pa i Peix (“Bread and Fish”, fourth Sunday in Lent) and the Botifarró festival at the beginning of October, which coincides with the pig slaughters.
