Porreres
Porreres is a municipality located on the south-central area of Mallorca. It belongs to the comarca of Es Pla and borders the municipalities of Felanitx, Campos, Llucmajor, Montuïri, Sant Joan and Vilafranca de Bonany. It has an extension of 85.63 km² and a population of 4364 inhabitants. More than 1000 hectares of municipal land are part of the Massís de Randa nature area of special interest.
About 30 archaeological sites confirm the presence of human beings in this area during prehistoric and ancient historic times.
Some remains from the Roman period have also been found, including a headstone. In 1300, King James II granted Porreres the village status.
Agriculture has always been the main source of wealth in this fertile area, where you can still see 36 windmills. The quality of its land is suitable for the cultivation of cereals, almond trees, carob trees, saffron, wine and apricot trees. Dried apricots have become very famous.
Porreres houses the headquarters of the Regulatory Council for the Designation of Origin of Es Pla and Llevant, located in Molí de n'Amengual.
The Sanctuary of Monti-Sion is also a must-see. It has a beautiful history that dates from the 14th century. In 1954, the villagers built a 3 km road up to the summit in one single day. The sanctuary stands on the top of the hill and houses a pancaritat (picnic held outside the village) on the first Sunday after Easter.
On each side of the road there are seven crosses built in the 15th century. They commemorate the Seven Sorrows and the Seven Joys of the Virgin, five of which still remain. Along the road you can also find small monuments (18th century) that are part of the Via Crucis, which ends in the sanctuary premises.
People enter the sanctuary using a staircase that goes up to the barrel vaulted portal. From there, you can go to the cloister, which has semicircular arches and a well used to catch and store rainwater.
