Llucmajor

Llucmajor is the biggest municipality in Mallorca. It borders Palma, Algaida, Montuïri, Porreres and Campos, and has important tourist areas such as Cala Pi, Cala Blava and S’Arenal, on the eastern part of Platja de Palma. This municipality contains mountain areas, cultivated land with dry-land crops, cliffs and beaches.
In this municipality there is one of the most important remains of the Talaiotic period, the settlement of Capocorb Vell (which can be visited). It is one of the first archaeological settlements on the island and exhibits an acceptable state of conservation.
After the conquest of Mallorca, the so-called Battle of Llucmajor took place in these lands, where in 1349 Peter IV of Aragon defeated his cousin James III of Mallorca, who lost his kingdom, which then was annexed to the Kingdom of Aragón.
The origins of Llucmajor’s population centre date from the early 14th century. At the end of the 15th century, the sanctuary of La Mare de Déu de Gràcia was founded on the slope of Puig de Randa. Built as a small chapel in 1449, it was replaced by a larger church later in the 18th century.
In the municipality of Llucmajor, as in other coastal areas in Mallorca, there are several watchtowers. Some of the well preserved ones are the towers of Cala Pi, S´Estalella and Cap Blanc. They are vestiges of the defence system that was put into practice as a result of the Arab and pirate incursions that took place in the 16th century.
Close to the motorway that links Palma and Llucamajor there is the race circuit where several motor competitions are held. There is also a kart track.
