Inca

Inca is the capital of Es Raiguer district, in the middle of Mallorca. It is located between the municipalities of Selva, Búger, Sa Pobla, Llubí, Sineu, Costitx, Sencelles, Binissalem, Lloseta and Mancor de la Vall, about 29 km from Palma. It has a population of 25000 people and is the nerve centre in term of agricultural and cattle farming on the island. It has been a city since 1900.

Inca is the fourth most populated municipality in Mallorca and is the judicial centre of this region. In this area 19 archaeological sites have been found, among which it is important to highlight the sites of Son Trempó, Ca los Carros, S’Argenteria, Es Puig, Can Colau, Es Batliu, Son Sastre, Son Fiol de Dalt and Sa Cova de s’Arena.

The weekly fair takes place every Thursday and has become a commercial reference point in the area. Once a year, Inca celebrates the so-called Dijous Bo (literally “Good Thursday”), a fair based on agriculture and cattle farming, amongst other sectors. It attracts people from all over the island. There, companies have the chance to exhibit their products. In this fair you can find almost everything you need: craftworks, gastronomic products, industrial products, farming machinery, etc. You can also buy animals. Even contests are held in this fair, after which some extraordinary specimens are exhibited. Both the number of exhibitors and the variety of products are huge. Dijous Bo is the most important fair held in Mallorca.

The day before Dijous Bo is Dimecres Bo (literally “Good Wednesday”), in which a wide diversity of activities, such as concerts or other events, take place.

For much of the 20th century, Inca was widely known for its footwear industry, which employed many people and made almost the entire city rich. Some of the most well-known Spanish shoe labels, such as Yanko, George’s, Camper, Lotusse, etc., had their factories in this municipality and established an important local suppliers and manufacturers network.

From an architectural point of view, it is important to mention the finca of Son Bordils, since it is one of the most interesting fincas in Inca. Other worth mentioning fincas are: Son Catlar, which preserves an interesting baroque chapel; Son Frare and Son Catiu, both with a round portal; and Son Vivot (17th century). Inca’s patron saints are Saint Abdon and Saint Sennen.
