Costitx

Located in the comarca of Es Pla, Costitx is a municipality that has lived from agriculture for many centuries. Due to this fundamental activity, you can still find some architectural examples of great interest, such as water wells, waterwheels and windmills, particularly the mill located in Can Loi, which conserves part of the original machinery.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, as the archaeological sites confirm, the population centre developed around an old Arab hamlet.
The Bous de Costitx, three bull heads found on the Talaiotic site of Son Corró, are emblem of the local heritage. These bronze figures are the best example of the bull worshiping culture in Mallorca during the Talaiotic culture. In the 20th century, the bull heads were taken to Madrid, although a replica of these bronze figures, discovered in 1895, can be seen at the Casa de Cultura, which also houses the Iberobalear Fauna Museum.
The parish church of Mare de Déu de Costitx began to be built at the end of the 17th century.
On the way out of the village stands the Sa Sínia, a well and a waterwheel from the Arab period which have recently been restored. Also of Arab origin is the hamlet of Can Quiam, the houses of which constitute fine examples of traditional Mallorcan rural architecture.
The facilities of the Mallorca Astronomical Observatory deserve special mention. The centre, inaugurated in 1991, aims to study and disseminate astronomy.
