This municipality located on the south part of Mallorca in the comarca of Migjorn covers an extension of 147.90 km². Nine km² of Campos are on the coast, where you can find the population centres of Ses Covetes, Sa Ràpita, Es Palmer, Sa Sorda, Sa Vinyola and Can Mandana.
Campos borders the municipalities of Porreres, Llucmajor, Felanitx, Ses Salines and Santanyí.
Campos is above all a coastal area that has been populated since prehistoric times, although the origins of the urban centre go back to the Middle Age.
In some of its streets there are a great number of Gothic houses that date from the 17th century as well as five watchtowers from the 16th century.
The church of Sant Julià was built between 1858 and 1873. The building is of neoclassical style. The bell tower (16th century) and some chapels older than the 18th century have been preserved. Inside the church, it is important to highlight the big vault and the luminosity of the white walls and their golden ornaments. The parish museum is located inside the church premises.
The municipal auditorium used to be the church of the old hospital. It was built in the 16th century. It is of Gothic style and has rib vaults.
The Convent of Sant Francesc was founded in the 17th century. It is important to mention the baroque facade and the interior altarpieces. The cloister has an interesting historical and artistic value.
The village started to develop in 1300. Its first church was Sant Blai’s, which was built in 1248 and still preserves the initial Gothic look.
In this municipality, which in the past was vulnerable to pirate attacks, stand out the watchtowers of Sa Torre, Son Cosmet, Can Bragues, d’en Catlar, Can Dameto, Can Francina and Can Cos, which currently is part of the municipal premises.
The economy of this municipality has been linked with agriculture from the very beginning. Its lands are fertile and agriculture was based on irrigated crops until a couple of years ago. These conditions also boosted the appearance of cattle farming.
Nowadays, the two coastal population centres have developed touristically from the old residential areas where locals used to live.
The municipality of Campos is flat and has a vast country path network, which is properly signposted and asphalted. All this turns Campos into a good place for cyclists.
