Centenarian establishments
Who doesn’t like to get closer to the charm that surrounds a historical establishment? If you have time and patience, in Mallorca you will discover with pleasure and admiration our old grocer’s shops, tiny but exquisite haberdasheries, or the counters and windows of some sweet shops and patisseries that were founded at the beginning of the last century.
Some years ago, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Shipping published an interesting book in recognition of the centenary establishments in Mallorca. The title is Establiments emblemàtics de Mallorca (“Emblematic establishments of Mallorca”). The book includes over fifty establishments older than one century.
This book, which has more than 200 pages, also collects black and white pictures of establishments that date from the 13th century, such as the bakery Forn de la Glòria. Others were already active in the 16th century, such as Can Miquel, Forn de sa Pelleteria or the esparto workshop of Ca La Seu.
In the 17th century some other establishments were founded in Mallorca, such as the haberdashery Ca Dona Angela (1685) and Can Frasquet (1697).
Emblematic places like for example Can Joan de s’Aigo, Vidrios Gordiola, Forn Fondo, Forn Can Salvador or Cerería Picornell date from the 18th century.
