Cycling
Due to its orographic and climatologic characteristics, the island of Mallorca is perfect for cycling. It is like a small continent with mountains, steep slopes and flat areas that make possible all kinds of competitions as well as the training of professional teams that come to island to improve their performance before starting the international competition calendar.
Palma has one of the best velodromes in the world. It is called Palma Arena. It was designed by the Dutch architect Sander Douma and built to host the Track Cycling World Championship in 2007. Its area covers 90000 square metres and has a capacity of 4500 spectators. It has also large windows to let in natural light as well as a track that competes with the best velodromes in the world. The wood used for the track is Siberian pine imported from the Ukraine. The circuit is 250 metres in length. The banked sides have an incline of 43 degrees on the turns and 15 degrees on the shorter straight sections for gaining velocity. The Arena has a car park with a capacity for 250 cars.
In Mallorca, several international cycling competitions take place every year:
The Mallorca International Cycling Race congregates the best international cycling packs in all categories: Continental, Élite Sub 23, national selections and clubs.
